In custody and parenting-time disputes, messages between parents are often the clearest record of what was agreed, what was missed and how each parent communicates. Family courts see a lot of cropped screenshots; a complete, time-ordered record is easier for everyone — including the judge — to follow.

What to collect

The whole thread for the relevant period, not only the worst messages. Showing the full context usually helps you more than it hurts.
Exact dates and times, in your local time zone, so they line up with pick-up schedules, school events and incidents.
Photos and voice notes that were part of the conversation.

How to get it from Instagram

In the Instagram app, open Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information.
Choose Download or transfer information, pick your Instagram account, then Some of your information and tick Messages.
Choose Download to device. Set the date range to cover the conversation, and set Format to JSON. Set media quality to High if photos matter.
Tap Create files. Instagram emails you when the ZIP is ready — often within minutes, sometimes a few days. Download it before the link expires.

Turning it into something the court can read

Drop the ZIP into the free tool, choose the conversation with the other parent, and set the date range to the period that matters. Add your case name and an exhibit label (for example “Exhibit B”). Every page gets a page number and Bates number, which makes it easy to refer to “page 14, message 212” in a declaration or at a hearing.

Good habits

Keep your replies calm — the record will show your side too.
Keep the original ZIP unchanged and note the SHA-256 value printed on the cover.
If you use a co-parenting app for new messages, keep Instagram records for the period before you switched.
